Jim O’Sullivan dropped the news during a top dealer’s meeting that the subcompact Mazda2 will be making its way over to US shores late next year.

“As consumers’ tastes and attitudes toward small vehicles have changed, we now believe strongly there is a place in our lineup for a car below our current least-expensive car, the Mazda3,” Says O’Sullivan. More details such as pricing and specs will be available closer to launch.

The Ford Fiesta comes out around the same time and built on the same platform, so it looks like we’ll be hard pressed to see which is the best choice come 2010.
